About Me

Djoko Susanto is the founder of Alfamart, which has more than 22,000 convenience stores across Indonesia and 2,000 stores in the Philippines. The sixth of 10 siblings, he started managing his parents' modest food stall inside a traditional market in Jakarta at age 17. He later partnered with clove cigarette tycoon Putera Sampoerna to open similar stalls and then a discount supermarket chain. When Putera sold his cigarette business to Philip Morris in 2005, Susanto bought the retail business and developed it into the Alfamart chain. In 2022, the company bought a $30 million stake in Bank Aladin Syariah, which provides sharia-compliant financial services.
