Rubens Ometto Silveira Mello became the world's first ethanol billionaire in 2007. Cosan, his sugar giant, is listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The company's origins date to 1936, when Ometto's grandparents established a sugarcane mill in Sao Paulo. After several takeovers, Cosan became one of the world's largest growers and processors of sugarcane and one of the largest producers of ethanol. Besides his Cosan shares, Ometto also holds a portfolio of real estate investments.
